Kitchen Mistakes That Are Easy to Make (And Hard to Fix)

Kitchen Mistakes That Are Easy to Make (And Hard to Fix)

Planning a new kitchen is one of the bigger decisions you'll make for your home. Get it right and you'll barely think about it for years. Get it wrong and you'll notice it every single day.

Here are some of the most common mistakes worth avoiding before you commit.

1. Underestimating How Much Storage You Need

Most people think they have a rough idea of how much storage they need. Most people are wrong. It's only once the boxes are unpacked and the worktops start filling up that the reality sets in. Plan for more than you think you'll need, and think about the specifics - deep drawers, larder units, and pull-outs are almost always worth the investment.

2. Choosing Looks Over Layout

A beautiful kitchen that doesn't work for how you actually cook is a frustrating one. Before you fall for a finish or a door style, spend time on the layout. Where will you prep food? Where does the washing up happen? Is the fridge too far from where you need it? The working triangle exists for a reason.

3. Skimping on the Worktop

The worktop takes more daily punishment than almost anything else in the room. It's not the place to cut costs. A quality quartz surface will outlast cheaper alternatives many times over and still look the part years down the line.

4. Ignoring the Lighting

Lighting is often treated as an afterthought, but it shapes how a kitchen feels at every hour of the day. Task lighting under wall units, ambient lighting overhead, and something warmer for the evenings - plan it in from the start rather than trying to retrofit it later.

5. Not Thinking About Ventilation

A kitchen that smells of last night's dinner isn't pleasant to be in. A good extractor, properly positioned and powerful enough for the space, makes a bigger difference than most people expect. It's easy to overlook during the planning stage and difficult to change once everything is in.

6. Rushing the Decision

A new kitchen is a long-term investment. Taking the time to visit a showroom, look at materials in person, and talk through your requirements with a designer almost always leads to a better outcome. What looks right on a screen doesn't always translate to real life.
